Carbon Farming potential in Guatemala

According to the FAO, Guatemala has 1.799 million hectares (17%) of land consisting of pastureland and meadows. Since 2001, it has lost about 1,298,000 hectares of land that was once covered by 30% or greater tree cover, and 450,000 hectares (34.6%) of its primary forests has been destroyed. On average Guatemala is losing approximately 28,100 hectares of primary forest each year and 76,300 hectares of land with tree cover 30% or greater.

Guatemala has enough pastureland available to potentially sequester up to 45 million tonnes of CO2/year through reforestation and agroforestry carbon farming. That's the equivalent of taking 9.7 million cars off the road in the USA.
